The department was established as the Department of Music Education in 1993, added the Master's Program in 2005, and was officially renamed as the Department of Music in 2006.

The curriculum emphasizes both academic and musical specialization, and the training of music teachers is as important as the development of performances. The main purpose of the program is to train music education teachers and music professionals, to equip  students with capacities in music education and music performance, as well as to cultivate the qualities of artists.

In order to enrich students' musical learning and broaden their musical horizons, the department organizes a series of lectures and concerts on a regular basis. The Department of Music invites music masters from domestic and abroad to give master classes, organizes academic conferences, and conducts exchange program with allied universities in foreign countries.

The department has set the following educational goals:
