The department was founded as Graduate Institute of Counseling and Educational Psychology (GICEP) in 2000. In response to the social changes and the transformation of the University, Department of Counseling and Applied Psychology, incorporating with GICEP, was established on August 1, 2006. The In-service Postgraduate Program was then established in 2014.
The department aims to cultivate excellent professional helpers, and takes "child and youth counseling" and "employee counseling and workplace health" as the characteristics of the department's development. Meanwhile, the department intends to train professional counseling psychologists and educators, as well as to assist students to improve their diversified professional knowledge and obtain professional license. Students can go from "theory", "practice" to "internship" step by step, and connect with the future workplace. These graduates will become professionals in society.
